“I honestly thought electricity would be more expensive.” Paul Bunne from Munich has to pay more.

Before that, he had gotten away scot-free for three years.

Munich – Altogether, his videos on TikTok have collected several million views.

Paul Bunne (30) has lived in Munich for several years, three of them in a spacious apartment in Maxvorstadt.

What he says about his time there made many viewers of the videos sit up and take notice.

He suddenly realized that he had not paid anything for the electricity he had used for three years.

The 30-year-old reports in his first video on the subject that he thought the electricity was included in the rental price.

“I just found out from social media that you pay extra for electricity and I’m wondering why we don’t learn something like that in school,” says Bunne at the beginning.

TikTok users responded to his confession with both understanding and dismayed assessments.

No electricity paid for an apartment in Munich for three years: Now the additional payment follows

“In principle, residents of an apartment or house have the obligation to register with the basic provider.

The legislature has regulated this in the Basic Services Ordinance,” explains Michael Silva, spokesman for Stadtwerke München (SWM), when asked by our editorial team.

Bunne clearly did not know the regulation.

A SWM employee reported in an interview with Bunne that a “vacant status” had previously been recorded in the system for his apartment.

This circumstance also explains why the Munich resident has not yet received an electricity bill.

The 30-year-old recorded the phone call with the employee for his TikTok fans.

Now that Bunne has basically turned himself in, he is asked to pay an additional payment.

However, the 30-year-old does not have to “file for personal bankruptcy,” as he had previously feared.

Stadtwerke München explain how “such constellations” can arise

He has to fork out a little more than 500 euros for the first two years, explains Bunne in an update video.

He has not yet received the invoice for the third year.

“I honestly thought electricity would be more expensive,” sums up the 30-year-old.

"I can live with that."

“It is very rare for landlords to conclude rental agreements that include electricity consumption.

However, some tenants assume that private electricity costs are included in the additional costs, but this is not the case.

Then constellations like the one in Paul Bunne’s case can arise,” explains SWM spokesman Silva.

Munich residents who have not yet paid a discount for electricity are asked to contact the municipal utilities immediately.

“Here the situation can be clarified and registration can be carried out properly.”
