For a few weeks now, the Starnberg Clinic has had the newly founded Medical Clinic II, which specializes in gastroenterology and hepatology.

In this way, the clinic wants to be prepared for the hospital reform - to the benefit of the patients.

Starnberg – Since 2022, Prof. Dr.

David Anz as chief physician for gastroenterology in Penzberg.

He is now also taking over the newly founded Medical Clinic II for gastroenterology and hepatology at the Starnberg Clinic.

The 46-year-old from Murnau am Staffelsee uses it to commute between the two hospitals.

Both belong to the Starnberg Clinics Association.

Their managing director Dr.

Thomas Weiler thinks Anz is at the best age to take on the position.

“He has enough professional experience and has seen everything.

But he still has enough time to leave his mark,” says Weiler about his colleague, who worked at the LMU Hospital in Munich for 16 years.

In gastroenterology and hepatology, the focus is on diseases of the esophagus, gastrointestinal tract, liver, bile ducts and pancreas.

The Starnberg hospital would like to set a new focus.

“Complex treatments for cancer patients in this area can now be carried out entirely in Starnberg,” explains Weiler.

Everything is now on site for complete care, as the different areas of internal medicine are covered in the Medical Clinic I and II.

There are 110 beds available in the internal medicine area, together with Clinic I, which includes cardiology and intensive care medicine, for example.

An exact number of gastroenterology beds has not been determined, explains Weiler.

According to him, the investment amount for the newly created area is in the seven-figure euro range.

A future model: Chief physicians responsible for several locations

According to Anz, one reason for the expansion is the sharp increase in demand in Penzberg.

“We are talking about an increase of more than 100 percent.

The phones don’t stand still anymore,” he says.

The proportion of endoscopy examinations that allow a look inside the body has increased by 40 percent in the past two years.

The two locations are linked through Anz's position - according to Weiler, a model for the future: "We would like to position ourselves as chief physicians across the entire group," he says.

Anz works twice a week in Penzberg and three times in Starnberg.

He is currently also examining patients from Ammersee and Fürstenfeldbruck in Penzberg - this will soon no longer be the case because they will then be cared for in Starnberg.

The new clinic is still under construction.

“The patients in Starnberg, like currently in Penzberg, will be able to be fully examined within a year at the latest,” says Anz.

A particular concern of his in Starnberg is endoscopic therapy in the digestive system.

He would also like to establish a research focus on cancers of the gastrointestinal tract.

The goal is to be certified as a colon cancer center in 2025.

Clinic boss: “Hospital reform does not give us any planning security”

Initial preparations are already underway to establish gastroenterology in the Herrschinger Schindlbeck Clinic (also part of the Starnberg Clinics) under Anz's leadership.

What exactly it will look like is still unclear.

“The hospital reform does not give us any planning security.

“It’s an intolerable situation,” criticizes Weiler.

With the new focus on gastroenterology and hepatology at the Starnberg location, Weiler sees itself prepared for all eventualities that the reform could bring with it.

To put it simply, it stipulates that clinics should become more specialized and can be merged.

The crucial question from Weiler's point of view is whether the Starnberg clinics will be recognized as a network or as a joint hospital in different building complexes.

“With a chief physician for all locations, we keep all options open.” In addition to Anz, the team consists of three senior physicians each in Starnberg and Penzberg as well as two senior physicians in Herrsching.

Anz studied at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and, before Penzberg, worked as chief physician at the LMU clinic in the city center.

He is in personal contact with experts from the university clinic.

He also gives lectures and supervises a research group at the LMU.

“Good networking brings many advantages in everyday life,” says Anz, who also works as an emergency doctor.

As a native of Hechendorf, I am familiar with the Five Lakes Region: “It’s nice to be back in my old homeland for work.”
