US President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump won the general elections across the US today (Tuesday), setting up a historic rematch in the November general election, despite low percentages of support for both candidates.
Trump won the Republican vote in a dozen states — including congressional-rich California and Texas — and edged out former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, his only surviving challenger, whose campaign no longer has a viable path to the nomination.
After an impressive showing in 15 states where more than a third of Republican delegates stood For the Super Tuesday election, Trump nearly gave up his third consecutive bid for the presidency, despite facing a long list of criminal charges.
Trump and Biden focused on each other as the results came in. In a victory speech at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump attacked the immigration policies of Biden and called him "the worst president" in history.
"November 5 is going to go down as the most important day in the history of our country," Trump said.
In a statement, Biden again presented Trump as a threat to American democracy.
"Tonight's results leave the American people with a clear choice : Will we continue to move forward or will we allow Donald Trump to drag us back into the chaos, division and darkness that defined his tenure?" said Biden.
