The level of the Seine should no longer rise.

And even begin its slow decline, centimeter by centimeter.

Placed on yellow alert on the Vigicrues site since July 24, the river which crosses Paris reached its flood peak during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday according to readings from the Pont d'Austerlitz station, which serves as a benchmark.

The Seine exceeded the 4 m mark, 4.03 m precisely, on Tuesday evening, or 10 cm more than at the start of the day.

This Wednesday morning, it began its slow and long decline, returning to 3.99 m at 9 a.m.

As a direct consequence of this flood peak, new quays were flooded, such as under the Alexandre-III bridge (VII and 8th arrondissement).

The river has burst its banks and interrupted the walks or jogging of pedestrians and cyclists.

Commercial barges were no longer accessible.

But it is above all the future of the migrant camp set up near the Sully bridge (Ve) which has concerned the authorities.

Homeless people evicted

As the flood peak was about to be reached, the tents and belongings of the homeless were affected by the rising water.

The police had to evacuate this camp which was set up on a bus lane surrounded by a barrier just above, on the bridge, reports BFM Île-de-France.

The deputy at the town hall in charge of solidarity and emergency accommodation, Léa Filoche, contacted by local television, estimated “the number of homeless people living on the banks at more than 400”.

She calls for “rapid emergency shelter for people who live on the docks”.

In the meantime, for this “usual” flood and far from the records at more than 8 m, the City has decided to close the Quai des Orfèvres, the Pointe du Vert-Galant, the Quai des Célestins, the Quai Henri-IV ( Port des Célestins), the Quai de Bourbon and the Maurice-Carême promenade, as well as the Tuileries and Henri-IV underground passages, the Île aux Cygnes, the Georges-Pompidou route, the Debilly port and the Montebello port .
