Federal Labor Minister Heil is planning to expand statutory pension insurance.

Civil servants and the self-employed could be included in the future.

Berlin – Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil is open to expanding statutory pension insurance to additional groups.

The SPD politician emphasizes the importance “that the pension level does not collapse”.

It is important to avoid pension cuts.

“In Germany we will also discuss how we can include other groups in the protection of the statutory pension insurance in the long term,” said Heil on Wednesday, March 6th, to the television channels RTL and NTV.

The minister continues to reject an increase in the retirement age.

Pension in Austria as a role model for Germany?

The possibility of including civil servants and the self-employed in statutory pension insurance is under debate.

This idea is not new.

The Left, the Greens and social organizations have been calling for such an expansion for a long time.

Austria, where the average pension is higher than in Germany, serves as a role model.

Nevertheless, Heil does not plan to adopt the Austrian system one-to-one.

He points out that the pension system in Austria also has its disadvantages.

However, there are aspects that should be looked at more closely.

As an example, the SPD politician cites the fact that “it is on a broader footing.”

Regarding the proposal for a higher retirement age, Heil spoke again in an interview.

He warned that this would “mean a reduction in pensions, especially for people in the shift system or in physically demanding jobs.”

For this reason, the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs rejects this proposal.

Instead, he advocates “flexible transitions to retirement” to take different employment histories into account.

Retiring at 70: Experts warn against false expectations

Some experts have repeatedly advocated “retirement at 70.”

However, Martin Werding, member of the Advisory Council for the Assessment of Overall Economic Development, warned against false expectations.

The Council proposes to increase the retirement age by one year every 20 years in order to counteract demographic developments.

On Tuesday, March 5th, Heil presented the new pension package together with Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP).

It envisages legally stabilizing the pension level at 48 percent by 2040.

In order to curb the increase in contributions in the medium term, the creation of a so-called “generational capital”, also known as stock pension, is to begin this year.

The federal government plans to take out loans for this and invest the money in stocks, among other things.
