The renovation of the Sonnengraben in Schongau is taking shape.

Next up is the ladder to heaven.

There will also be something new to discover soon.

Schongau - Last year, the city began renovating the dilapidated Sonnengraben and the police servants' tower.

Since Monday (March 4th), work has continued at the Sonnengraben.

Among other things, the railings are being installed, explains Martin Blockhaus from the city's building department when asked by Schongauer Nachrichten - we are on the home stretch.

Next week, work will continue on the Himmelsleiter, where it goes from the old town down to Dornauer Weg.

The stairs there are being repaired.

As far as the schedule is concerned, things are looking good: “We want to be finished by mid/end of May,” says Blockhaus.

The Sun Pit and the Sky Ladder will then be officially released at a small celebration.

Attraction at the Schongauer Sonnengraben - pedestrians still have to be patient

At that point at the latest, those interested can take a look through the new panoramic telescope that the city has installed at Sonnengraben: The telescope contains a projection disk that shows the mountain peaks.

But be careful: “The part of the Sonnengraben has not yet been officially released,” explains Blockhaus.

A “no pedestrians allowed” sign and barriers make this quite clear.

Of course, Blockhaus also knows that there are always curious people who don't care and just take a look through the new attraction on the historic city wall.

The situation at the police servants' tower has improved due to renovation

Until this is officially permitted, walkers can take a closer look at the police servants' tower.

The renovation work on the historic building was completed last year, according to city architect Sebastian Dietrich.

When renovating the façade in accordance with listed buildings, experts took care of the gray walls, which were struggling with moisture, but also because the ravages of time naturally take their toll on the historic building.

“We tried to improve the situation somewhat,” said Dietrich.

Specifically, the base of the police servants' tower, especially towards Lindenplatz, was “somewhat protected and better positioned.

We assume, as is generally to be expected with historical buildings, that a certain patina will reappear over time.

The tower will not remain virgin forever.” Historical buildings that are so old cannot be dried out like a modern building.

“We know this from all sorts of historic buildings.”
