The shop door of the Brendel bakery in Pottenstein, Franconia will soon remain closed forever.

A difficult situation – for customers, employees and the baker couple themselves.

Pottenstein – At the end of March the oven goes off – forever.

Then the 112-year history of the Brendel bakery in Pottenstein, Franconia ends.

The owners Elsa and Erich Brendel can no longer continue the traditional business for reasons of age.

Running a bakery like this is “really tiring,” says Elsa Brendel, but she and her husband are simply “not so fit anymore.”

Unfortunately, the couple has not found a successor - neither within nor outside the family.

The three daughters have no interest, says Brendel, even though one is a master baker.

However, she now lives in the Netherlands.

Traditional bakery is closing: the bakery profession is unattractive for many young people

And no one else seems to be interested in taking over the traditional business.

This could also be due to the fact that the bakery profession is not particularly attractive to younger people.

“The working hours, the weekend shift” – these are probably the main reasons for this, says Elsa Brendel.

However, there are no economic reasons for closing the business, as the boss emphasizes: “The bakery went great.” And that despite increased costs.

People even came from Nuremberg or Bayreuth to buy their bread and rolls from Brendels.

Understandably, customers are very disappointed about the imminent closure.

The Brendel family has run the bakery for three generations

But it's not just the customers who are sad, the employed baker and the saleswoman would also have liked to continue.

The situation is also “very difficult” for husband Erich, who has been running the bakery, which opened in 1912, for the third generation - and now unfortunately has to end this family tradition.
