After 25 years, the instigators of the murder of the Sicilian Uil trade unionist Mico Geraci,
killed with a barrage of shots fired from a shotgun, on 8 October 1998 in Caccamo (Pa), in front of his son and wife , have a name
. .
The Carabinieri, delegated by the Palermo DDA led by the prosecutor Maurizio de Lucia, served a precautionary custody order on the Trabia bosses, Pietro and Salvatore Rinella, in prison.
Over the years the investigation into the crime has been closed and reopened several times.
Despite focusing on the mafia trail from the beginning, the investigations had never managed to identify either the instigators or the material perpetrators of the crime.
The first dismissal was decided in 2001, then, after the revelations of the repentant Nino Giuffrè, former head of the Caccamo district, the investigation began again.
The statements of the justice collaborator, however, were not confirmed and in 2006 there was a second dismissal.
However, Giuffrè had given valuable insights, describing the context in which the assassination took place and attributing the decision to eliminate the trade unionist, involved in politics and at the forefront in denouncing the interests of Cosa Nostra, to the Corleonese boss Bernardo Provenzano.
Over the years, other former mafiosi such as Emanuele Cecala, Andrea Lombardo and Massimiliano Restivo have decided to collaborate with justice by revealing details on a series of unsolved crimes, including that of Geraci.
Hence the new reopening of the investigation and, today, the precautionary measures for the instigators Salvatore and Pietro Rinella.
