Thor the turtle was released into the sea today in Numana (Ancona) after surgery and long rehabilitation at the Sea Turtle Recovery Center of the Cetacea Foundation in Riccione: Thor was found trapped in a tangle of fishing lines and hooks last October by a yachtsman off the coast of Fano.
Thor was equipped with a satellite transmitter thanks to a project co-financed by the European Commission through Life funds.
The Life Medturtles project has created cross-border cooperation for the conservation of sea turtles in the Mediterranean, and among the project actions there is turtle-tracking, i.e. the monitoring of the movements of Caretta carettas after their return to nature.
Accompanying Thor, in addition to the Cetacea Foundation staff, are the Conero Ferrymen who have been collaborating with the Romagna association for more than 10 years by offering environmental education interventions on their boats and a summer sea turtle release program at the Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle.
Today's event marks the beginning of a collaboration with the cartoon "Acquateam - Adventures at sea: The Turtle and the Manatee" on Rai Yoyo on 23 February and now on Rai Play.
This is an international animation production created in Italy by producer Federico Fiecconi and co-produced by GraFFiti Creative, Toonz Media Group (India) and Telegael with the participation of Rai Kids and with the scientific consultancy of marine biologist Mariasole Bianco, scientific communicator of the Kilimanjaro program on Rai3 and of the Worldriseonlus association.
Thor is equipped with a satellite transmitter, just like the little protagonist of the Acquateam episode - Adventures at sea.
The inspiration, explains director Riccardo Mazzoli, came from a visit to Riccione.
