The tallest building in Lower Saxony is located in Rhauderfehn.

The huge facility, several hundred meters high, serves a special purpose.

Leer district – higher, wider, more powerful: superlative buildings can also be found in Lower Saxony.

One of the tallest buildings in Germany is even located in the northern state - more precisely in the municipality of Rhauderfehn.

The fourth largest municipality in the Leer district offers enough space for eight huge masts that serve a special purpose.

352.8 meters high: military masts are the tallest structures in Lower Saxony

This refers to the Rhauderfehn naval radio transmitter, which is the tallest structure in Lower Saxony.

Also known as DHO38 in specialist circles, it is a long-wave transmitter for the German Navy.

The masts, each 352.8 meters high, are used for one-way communication with the Navy's submarines and the boats of other NATO members.

The second tallest building in Germany is in Rhauderfehn.

More than 50 years ago, more precisely in January 1966, planning for the transmitter system began in the Leer district.

After construction work began a year later, the radio masts were gradually built on the former Westermoor shooting range until the system was put into operation in December 1982.

In total, costs amounted to 181.8 million German marks.

Most recently, Rhauderfehn became known through little Kilian, who was suffering from cancer.

A huge motorcade drove through the small town and fulfilled the six-year-old's big wish.

Second tallest building in Germany – only the Berlin television tower is larger

The huge masts are now among the tallest military structures in Western Europe.

The Rhauderfehn transmission system even makes it to second place among the tallest structures in Germany (after two 363-meter-high transmission masts in Donebach in Baden-Württemberg were blown up in 2018).

However, from a distance it is visible from a greater distance.
