Until Equal Pay Day on March 6th, women in Germany work virtually without pay compared to their male colleagues.

In Bavaria it takes even longer.

Fürth - March 6th is Equal Pay Day.

In Germany, women will earn an average of 18 percent less than men in 2023.

“In Bavaria, the gender wage gap is 21 percent, which is higher than the national average,” as the Bavarian State Office for Statistics explained in a press release on March 6th.

Women in Germany work the equivalent of 66 days without pay compared to their male colleagues - in Bavaria it is even 77.

March 6th is Germany: In Bavaria, women are working even longer without pay

For both Germany and Bavaria, the unadjusted gender pay gap remained unchanged compared to the previous year.

“The gender pay gap in the Free State, adjusted for structural differences between the sexes, will be seven percent in 2023 (2022: seven percent).

On a nationwide average, the adjusted gender pay gap will be six percent in 2023 (2022: seven percent),” the statement continues.

Unadjusted gender pay gap vs. adjusted gender pay gap

The unadjusted gender pay gap quantifies the percentage difference between the average gross hourly earnings of women compared to that of men

This value does not take structural differences between the sexes into account

Differences between the sexes can be seen, for example:

B. in career choice, scope of employment, level of education, professional experience or the proportion of management positions

The adjusted gender pay gap removes the part of the earnings gap that is due to structural differences between the genders.

It therefore measures the earnings gap between women and men with comparable labor market and career-relevant characteristics

Until Equal Pay Day, women work for free

Until Equal Pay Day on March 6th, i.e. 66 days since the beginning of the year, women in Germany work mathematically without remuneration compared to men.

“The lower the pay inequality between the sexes, the earlier in the year the Day of Action for Pay Equality takes place.

The gender-specific difference in earnings itself is recorded in the gender pay gap.

Since this in Bavaria will be three percentage points above the national average in 2023, Equal Pay Day in the Free State will take place eleven days later, i.e. on March 17th.

“As a result, women in Bavaria work mathematically for 77 days without remuneration,” the press release continues.

Unadjusted gender pay gap in Bavaria 2023

In 2023, women will receive an average of 21.24 euros, 5.61 euros less gross hourly earnings than men (26.85 euros).

This means that the unadjusted gender pay gap in Bavaria is 21 percent for the third year in a row.

Compared to the previous year, gross hourly earnings increased by around four percent for both women (2022: 20.41 euros) and men (2022: 25.84 euros).

Adjusted gender pay gap in Bavaria 2023

The adjusted gender pay gap in Bavaria is - as in the previous year - seven percent.

“The adjusted gender pay gap should be seen as an upper limit for possible earnings discrimination, as not all factors relevant to earnings are available for the analysis.

For example, there is no information on family-related interruptions to employment in the earnings survey,” explains the State Statistics Office.

There is another indicator: the gender gap in the labor market.

In addition to the earnings gap per hour, this also takes into account gender-specific differences in paid working hours per month and in labor force participation.

“Women not only earn less per hour, but are also less likely to participate in the workforce or work part-time more often than men,” the explanation states.

Accordingly, three variables are included in the calculation of the indicator: gross hourly earnings, paid working hours and employment rates.

“The higher the gender gap in the labor market, the greater the wage inequality in the labor market.”

In 2023, women will spend 20 percent (gender hours gap) less time on paid work than men.

“The figures for employment in 2023 for women and men lead to a gender employment gap of 10 percent,” according to the State Office for Statistics.

The gender gap in the labor market (calculated from the gender pay gap, gender hours gap and gender employment gap) in the Free State will be 43 percent in 2024 - four percentage points above the national average.
