After his controversial statements on the war in Ukraine, Emmanuel Macron speaks with his predecessors.
The President of the Republic is due to receive former heads of state Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande this Wednesday, the Élysée announced Tuesday evening.
He must “exchange with them on the situation in Ukraine”.
The interview with François Hollande must take place at 6 p.m., according to the Élysée program, the one with Nicolas Sarkozy at 7 p.m.
This is not the first time that Emmanuel Macron has consulted his predecessors.
In February 2022, shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory, the President of the Republic met Nicolas Sarkozy.
“The path of dialogue, of diplomacy is difficult, often disappointing, but there is no alternative.
We must therefore continue on this path,” declared the former head of state.
Macron “takes responsibility” for his recent comments”
French President Emmanuel Macron deemed it “necessary” on Tuesday from Prague to shake up Ukraine’s allies, urging them “not to be cowardly” in the face of an “unstoppable” Russia.
He also said he “accepts” his recent controversial comments on the possibility of sending Western soldiers to Ukraine for support, non-combatant missions.
On the question of sending troops, the vast majority of Western countries had already made it known that they were absolutely not considering such a scenario.

Asked about Emmanuel Macron's declarations, Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné affirmed Tuesday evening, in an interview on LCI, that it was necessary to “defeat Russia without waging war against Russia, that is the framework that the President of the Republic has set (…) and the framework of co-belligerence must not be achieved.”
