Highlights: “That was a tricky story’ - diving platforms in the “Rigi-Rutsch'n” in Peißenberg were dismantled. The work is more dangerous than it looks. There is always the risk that a concrete slab will break slips out of the chains that hold them and falls to the ground. “This could happen if the load is not calculated correctly - that's why matters need to be worked carefully,” says Andreas Ranft, a concrete expert.

In the Peißenberg “Rigi-Rutsch'n” outdoor pool area, five diving towers were dismantled over two days.

This was a risky affair.

Everyone involved was therefore relieved when it was over.

Peißenberg – Sparks fly as the saw eats through the concrete centimeter by centimeter.

They fly for meters around the concrete slab that until recently crowned the diving tower in the “Rigi-Rutsch'n”.

The sparks mix with the cloud of dust that flies away from the saw blade.

It smells like smoke.

The saw screeches so loudly that it can still be heard in the entrance area of the “Rigi-Rutsch'n”.

The floor is light gray.

A layer of dust has settled over the plates.

Andreas Ranft moves the button on the remote control and it suddenly becomes silent.

He exhibited the concrete saw with the radio control.

“It was a huge event yesterday and today,” says Ranft: “It was a hot ticket.” He is the owner of the company “Diamanttechnik Ranft”, which was on Tuesday and Wednesday together with the companies “Holzer” and “Albrecht”. was responsible for dismantling the five diving towers in the “Rigi-Rutsch'n” outdoor pool in Peißenberg.

Three companies worked together

It's not just the concrete expert who seems relieved that the construction work went well.

Simon Schweyer, who drove the excavator for the “Holzer” company, and Jürgen Bacher from the “Albrecht” company, who operated the large crane, also have a big smile on their faces.

“I can sleep better again today,” says Ranft with a laugh.

His colleagues laugh with him.

Now that the most dangerous thing has been done without anything happening, the mood is almost relaxed.

The five diving towers served visitors to the Rigirutsch'n in Peißenberg for over 40 years.

The two one-meter and two three-meter diving platforms as well as the five-meter tower were particularly popular with children and young people.

But now they had to be removed as part of the renovation work on the outdoor pool.

They are to be replaced by a new diving tower system.

Dismantling of the old towers began on Tuesday.

First, the foundations of the towers were excavated so that the concrete slabs that make up the diving towers could then be sawn into several parts.

Towers sawn into several parts

The five meter high diving tower required the most effort, as Ranft explains between two sawing operations shortly after the tower was removed.

The upper part, the jumping area, had to be removed with the help of a crane and transported several meters over the outdoor pool area.

The jumping surface weighs six and a half tons.

The diving platform block, which weighs eight tons, should not be ignored.

The work is more dangerous than it looks: “It was quite a risky thing here,” says Ranft: “Everything that has to do with sawing and lifting is something tricky.” There is always the risk that a concrete slab will break slips out of the chains that hold them and falls to the ground, either seriously damaging something or even burying a person.

“This could happen if the load is not calculated correctly,” says Ranft.

That's why such tricky matters need to be worked on very carefully - by everyone involved.

“The interaction has to be right.” For such orders you need colleagues who keep calm and know their stuff.

Just trying to do something randomly doesn't work in such cases.

Challenging for various reasons

The job of dismantling the five diving towers was not only challenging because of its danger, the workers were also under time pressure, says Ranft: “We had to be exactly on schedule, among other things, because of the subsequent trades.” Ultimately, the responsible construction companies had to adhere to a strict schedule, as the renovation of the outdoor pool area in the Peißenberg “Health and Baths Park” should be completed by the beginning of the summer season this year.

Even if the concrete diving towers are replaced by a stainless steel version, they are still used in a new form: the dismantled concrete slabs are now, so to speak, recycled and reused for road construction, for example.

If everything goes according to plan - and that's what it looks like at the moment - then the "Rigi-Rutsch'n" will have its landmark back at the start of the outdoor pool season: As already reported, the plastic parts from which the new slide system will consist have already been installed manufactured.

The ever-popular water slide had to be closed in the summer of 2020 after a defect and was then demolished in 2021.
