The sidewalk on Neue Bergstrasse is narrow - the uphill cyclists and pedestrians tolerated there do not fit next to each other in some places.

The building committee has now decided on a cycle protection strip.

Landsberg - The protective strip for cyclists on Münchner Straße is a success - their number has almost tripled, as the head of the public order office, Ernst Müller, reported to the building committee.

That's why the Neue Bergstraße should now also be provided with such markings for cyclists traveling uphill.

After repair work, the road markings need to be renewed anyway.

The protective strip should start after the underground car park exit and be 1.25 meters wide.

The additional uphill merge lane for traffic from the underground car park will be removed.

This makes the roadway wide enough to accommodate the protective strip.

It is primarily intended to enable drivers of Pedelecs and bikes with trailers to get around safely.

This would make it clear to drivers “that other road users are to be expected in this area,” said Müller.

Children, seniors and cyclists without motorized assistance are still allowed to ride on the sidewalk.

The administration's proposal met with broad approval in the building committee.

“The protective strip is a quick, good solution for the moment,” praised traffic officer Karl Egger (Greens).

However, the ADFC points out the risk that the protective strip could encourage drivers not to maintain the minimum lateral distance when overtaking cyclists.

Especially when cornering, cars may be tempted to pass cyclists in their own lane.

Hans-Jürgen Schulmeister (Landsberger Mitte/LM) also saw the danger of overtaking too closely and calculated that with the appropriate vehicle width, the distance to the cyclist could only be 25 centimeters.

“I personally wouldn’t be entirely comfortable with that.” He suggested a ban on overtaking in the curve area.

But this will lead to backlogs, warned Müller.

“I doubt whether that would contribute to peace between road users.”

Ernst Müller replied to a question from Petra Kohler-Ettner (CSU) that removing the guardrail in the middle of the street is also out of the question.

The guard rail serves as fall protection if cars driving downhill slip on black ice.

Egger and parliamentary group colleague Roger Mandl want to see the goal of a cycle path on the street pursued in the longer term.

This was already discussed in 2019, but was rejected due to high costs.

In view of the increasing number of e-bikes, Hubert Schlee (CSU) also emphasized: “We need a proper cycle path there.” Mayor Doris Baumgartl (UBV) explained that this was also provided for in the city’s cycle path concept.

The establishment of the protective strip was unanimously decided.

Monitoring will check whether the number of cyclists is increasing as a result.
