Two birds with one stone: At the presentation of the voluntary social school year, Wolfgang Bäder from the Do it initiative, which finances the pilot project, also handed over 1000 euros each to Barbara Maier-Steiger and Hildegard Wienholt (r.) from Herrschinger Insel and to Carmen Fuchs (l.) from the Herrsching relief service.

Since the beginning of the current school year, there have been 14 students in Herrsching who are completing a so-called voluntary social school year.

A pilot project from Herrschinger Insel, financed by the Do it initiative, which is intended to set a precedent in the district.

Herrsching

– Barbara Maier-Steiger is thrilled.

The managing director of Herrschinger Insel has only received positive feedback so far.

The Voluntary Social School Year (FSSJ) project has been running as a pilot for the district under the umbrella of the Herrschinger facility since September last year.

Wolfgang Bäder from the Do it initiative, which supports the Herrschinger Tafel, was quickly inspired to support this pilot project.

Herrsching's mayor Christian Schiller has taken over the patronage.

The project is based on the so-called Neustadt model.

It was launched there in 2003 by Caritas.

It offers students the opportunity to get socially involved, take responsibility and train important social skills.

There are also suggestions for your future career and a certificate at the end, which can be helpful when applying for social professions.

“We hired a working student to implement it,” says Barbara Maier-Steiger in a press interview.

Together with her, she approached schools to promote the FSSJ in the 8th and 9th grades.

This should not be confused with the FSJ, the voluntary social year, which school leavers can choose for career orientation.

14 students from the secondary school and the Christian-Morgenstern-Middle School registered.

“Right away,” says the island managing director happily.

That is not a given.

And the project is going extremely well.

The 14 to 15 year olds usually help out for two hours a week at institutions such as the Tafel, the volunteer fire department, Johanniter or in the kindergartens.

In total, you have to complete 60 hours of social work.

In order to introduce the young people to this voluntary work, there were two seminars and so-called team building sessions.

“The students are looked after by us.

We organize the operations.” This effort will be rewarded with certificates in July.

According to Barbara Maier-Steiger, both students and social institutions have expressed themselves positively so far.

“We will definitely continue this next school year.

We hope that this will become a success and we are happy that the schools are taking part.” “You just have to take them by the hand,” says Carmen Fuchs.

Chairwoman of the Herrsching relief service, which, like the island, is housed in the community's own house at Bahnhofstrasse 38 and was also able to hand over a further 1,000 euros in donations for the pools and the island.

The support service would also be happy to use this help from young people, but cannot do so for data protection reasons in the nursing service.

And the visiting service of the emergency service in the Seefeld and Herrsching hospitals has “unfortunately” been on hold since Corona.

The aim is to introduce the FSSJ throughout the entire district after its successful introduction in Herrsching, says Barbara Maier-Steiger.

Ideally from bases in larger communities such as Gilching and Gauting or the city of Starnberg.

The project is also supported by the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture.
