There are many valuable ingredients in the green florets and stalk, which then end up in a simple potato and broccoli casserole or crispy broccoli fritters, for example.

Broccoli not only contains the minerals magnesium, iron, calcium and potassium, but also provides important vitamins such as vitamin C and folic acid.

It strengthens the immune system and boosts the metabolism and has more than earned its place on the ingredients list.

Simply explained, made even quicker: broccoli can be divided into florets or cooked whole.

Prepare broccoli correctly for cooking: the stalk is also edible

When purchasing, you should make sure that the broccoli does not have any yellow or brown spots.

You can also recognize fresh broccoli by its firm stem and crunchy florets.

It will keep for several days in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator.

If the broccoli is then used, for example in a lasagne with ham and broccoli, it must first be washed.

The florets are then separated from the stalk; the latter can also be cooked.

To do this, cut off the dry end, peel the stalk and cut it into small pieces.

The florets and the chopped stalk can then be cooked in different ways, depending on the recipe.

1st method: Cook broccoli the classic way in a pot

The most common method is cooking it in a pot, which is ideal if the broccoli is to be served as a side dish with meat, fish, etc.

  • Add the cut florets and the chopped broccoli stalks to the water and cook for about five to seven minutes.

  • Remove the broccoli from the pot with a slotted spoon or carefully strain it into a colander.

  • Broccoli is used in many delicious recipes, and there is no shortage of varied ideas.

2nd method: Blanch broccoli - this is how it works

When blanching, the broccoli is only cooked briefly and then allowed to take a bath in cold ice water.

This means it retains its green color and stays crisp.

It looks great in fresh salads or a Spanish low-carb frittata.

  • Fill a bowl with cold water and ice cubes and set aside.

Bring salted water to a boil in a large pot.

  • Add broccoli florets to the boiling water and cook for about a minute.

Add directly to the ice water with a slotted spoon.

Cook the stalk pieces in boiling water for about one and a half to two minutes and then also rinse in ice water.

    3rd method: Cook broccoli whole

An even simpler method for cooking broccoli is very popular on the video platform TikTok.

The broccoli is not chopped up, but simply added to the pot as a whole head.

A healthy side dish for the creamy onion and cream chicken is quick to make.

  • Fill a large pot with water, add salt and bring to the boil.

    Wash broccoli.

  • First put the whole head of broccoli, including the stalk and florets, into the boiling water and cook for about five to six minutes.

  • Remove the broccoli with tongs and cut off the florets.

Store the stalk and use it for other purposes.
