Söder really wants to have the lunar control center.

Next week his wish could come true when a letter of intent is signed.

Oberpfaffenhofen – The vision of a control center for future lunar missions in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich is becoming more and more concrete.

Next Wednesday, the heads of the European Space Agency Esa and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), together with the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU), plan to sign a corresponding declaration of intent in Munich.

Esa General Director Josef Aschbacher and DLR CEO Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla are expected to attend this event, as Esa, DLR and the State Chancellery jointly announced on Thursday.

Söder drives us forward: “We definitely want to have the lunar control center.”

The DLR site in Oberpfaffenhofen already houses one of the control centers for the international space station ISS.

It therefore only seems logical to establish a future lunar control center there.

It was emphasized that the center will continue to play a crucial role in the planning of upcoming lunar missions as part of NASA's Artemis program in the coming years.

Söder had already emphasized about a year and a half ago: “We definitely want to have the lunar control center.”

Oberpfaffenhofen could soon be the German center for lunar missions.

The decision will be made next week when the leaders of the European Space Agency and DLR meet.
