The United States and other countries on Thursday carried out new airdrops of aid to Gaza where war and famine threaten hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, according to the Pentagon and the Jordanian military.

Military aircraft from Jordan, the United States, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Egypt took part in the operation, the Jordanian army said in a statement.

“American C-130 planes dropped more than 38,000 meals” on northern Gaza, the American military command for the Middle East, Centcom, indicated on X, at a time when this Palestinian territory besieged by Israel is facing a humanitarian disaster.

According to the UN, famine is “virtually inevitable” for 2.2 million inhabitants of Gaza, the vast majority of the population, with humanitarian aid arriving only in dribs and drabs.

On Monday, a Pentagon spokeswoman said between 30 and 120 trucks per day had delivered aid to Gaza over the past week.

“It is clearly insufficient to feed the population,” declared Sabrina Singh, while specifying that the airdrops were intended to complement and not replace the aid delivered by land.

Children are “starting to starve”

The UN has urged the world to “flood” Gaza with aid to save children “who are beginning to die of hunger” in a territory where the health system has collapsed.

Since the start of the war, the Jordanian army has carried out 29 airdrops of aid to Gaza, in addition to 23 others carried out jointly with other countries, it said in its statement on Thursday.

The United States, Israel's most loyal ally, began dropping aid on Saturday into Gaza, which has been plagued by incessant bombing by Israel since the bloody Hamas attack on October 7.

The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 1,160 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli data.

In retaliation, Israel vowed to annihilate Hamas, in power in Gaza since 2007, which it considers a terrorist organization along with the United States and the European Union.

Its army launched an offensive which has so far left 30,800 dead in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas health ministry.
