Lufthansa said Thursday that it expects the European Commission to approve its acquisition of a41% stake in Italy's ITA Airways, for an investment of 325million euros, by the end of the year.
The German carrier said it is "expecting the EU Commission's approval for an investment in the Italian airline ITA Airwaysover the course of this year," in a statement on its 2023 results.
"The Lufthansa Group is working closely and constructively with the EU Commission to achieve a swift conclusion and subsequent implementation of the transaction.
"With the planned investment in ITA Airways, the Lufthansa Group is driving forward the internationalization of the company in order to make better use of attractive growth opportunitiesabroad".
In January the European Commission launched an in-depth investigation into the proposed deal between Lufthansa and ITAAirways, taking to phase two the antitrust examination of the transaction that began in late November after the Italian Treasury, currently the sole owner of the company that replaced the loss -making former flag-carrier Alitalia in 2021, and the German carrier formally notified Brussels of the plans.
