For International Women's Day, the installation 'Monuments are all male' will be inaugurated at the Pincio in Rome, a symbol of a monumental patriarchy, where out of 228 busts only 3 are dedicated to women.
For March 8, the creative duo Waw, who has been working on these themes since 2012, has decided to temporarily cover 20 busts of men with as many female portraits, illustrated and printed on canvas.
There are 20 women who have made history and who deserve visibility as a sign of power: they are scientists, fighters, managers, creatives, who artistically make space for themselves on the Pincio.
For the Waw duo it wasn't easy to choose 'only' 20 women; therefore many absences remain.
The message is that too often women represented in statues in public space are sexualised and have very scantily clad or undressed bodies at all, even if the subject has no reason to be represented in this way.
An example is the fountain dedicated to Ilaria Alpi and Maria Grazia Cutuli, in the province of Viterbo, which portrays the two journalists completely naked.
Which doesn't happen for men.
The problem, therefore, is not only quantitative, but also and above all qualitative.
