An LBV exhibition about building breeders can currently be seen in the Gauting town hall.

The community already had birds like these in their underground car park.

Gauting

– Preserving biodiversity through flowering areas in the Gauting municipal area, but also with nesting aids on house facades, “is a concern for us,” said Mayor Dr.

Brigitte Kössinger at the opening of the exhibition on the topic of building breeders, which the State Association for Bird Protection (LBV) set up in the “swallow-friendly” Gauting town hall.

The protected building breeders such as swallows, swifts, house sparrows and bats are at risk from renovation and construction measures, explains nature conservation officer Michaela Thiel at the vernissage on Monday afternoon.

The protected birds, which are the cultural successors of humans, lack wall projections or roller shutter boxes for their nests on modern, insulated house facades.

In order to motivate Gauting's citizens to install nesting aids for endangered bird species on their house facades, Thiel brought the LBV's traveling exhibition to Gauting, as Kössinger said.

With little effort you can create a home for swallows and swifts.

Swallow angles helped as a nesting aid

People in the Gauting town hall have experience with swallows.

“Swallows used to live in the town hall underground car park,” said the nature conservation officer.

But the young birds often defecated on cars parked there - much to the chagrin of the car owners.

That's why the community had so-called swallow angles hung from inexpensive, environmentally friendly wood.

This meant that the swallows had certain corners available for their nests, no longer dirty the cars and could still live in the garage.

For this exemplary behavior, the community of Gauting received the “Swallow-Friendly House” plaque from the State Association for Bird Protection in 2021, Thiel reported, and called on Gauting residents to imitate it in order to create more habitat for building nesters.

The exhibition on endangered domestic building breeders is hanging in the lower town hall foyer until March 22nd.

You can also see the inexpensive, wooden swallow square from Klaus Janke's workshop in Finning.

Those interested can find out details about building breeders on Tuesday, March 12th.

Franz Pommer from LBV will give a lecture in the Gauting town hall from 7:15 p.m.

At the environmental committee meeting on Tuesday, March 12th, there will be a lecture on building breeders in the town hall from 7:15 p.m.
