The Olympic Games in Paris are threatened by
a call for strike by public employees
.
The leader of the CGT, Sophie Binet, sent a “red card” to the government last Sunday, alerting them to the “social challenge” that her organization represents and which no one has addressed so far.
“The Games
are hundreds of thousands of workers who are affected
,” explained the union leader.
“Firstly, those who
will have to work much more than usual
with overtime and paid leave that they will not be able to enjoy.
That is why we ask ourselves
what the social conditions of this work are
.
How are we going to accommodate all the workers who will have to come to Ile-de-France for the Olympic Games?” asked Sophie Binet.

A new angle after the departure of Philippe Martínez, its old leader.
“How are we going to take care of your children during the school holidays?
What bonuses will they get?
At the moment there is nothing on this front
,” lamented the new general secretary of the second labor union in France.
Binet asks that a meeting be organized
in Matignon
on "the social challenge" that the competition represents.
Social truce?
The president of the organizing committee of the Paris Olympic Games, Tony Estanguet, called at the end of February
for a social “truce” during the competition.
Negotiations have been going on for several months in different sectors to address a social conflict in
the police, transport and hospitals,
in order to compensate
for the postponement of holidays and summer overtime.
On January 30, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, announced
a bonus of up to 1,900 euros
for police officers and gendarmes working in
Île-de-France
.
But the issue is not completely resolved in other sectors.
A restriction on the right to strike during the games is approved by 72.78 percent of those surveyed and rejected by 27.22 percent, according to a survey by the conservative newspaper Le Figaro.
The Ministry of Labor assures that
“there will be no strike during the Olympic Games.”
The fragile bridges in front of the crowd
As if the threat of strikes were not enough, it is the bridges over the Seine and their strength to withstand crowds that are now in question.
There will be the spectacular opening ceremony,
on the water.
More than 220,000 people will be invited free of charge to attend the ceremony but
will be selected.
The bridges over the Seine and their solidity are in question.

Following the incident at the Sully Bridge,
which was hit by a boat at the end of January
, the authorities are carrying out an evaluation of the various Parisian bridges and docks, which will host the public and equipment during the nautical parade.
“The objective is to ensure and develop what is necessary,” emphasizes the City Council.
This is an important precautionary measure.
Because
they will host thousands of spectators
and imposing technical facilities during the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Games. The bridges that cross the Seine in the capital are the subject of special attention by the authorities.
All of these Parisian infrastructures are
currently being inspected
, particularly those intended to support the public and the facilities.

It must be said that these structures belonging to the City of Paris,
some built in the 16th century
, are not used to receiving
so many people at the same time.

On July 26,
more than 100,000 people who bought tickets to attend the
inaugural show on the Seine will sit on stands installed on the lower platforms.
On the high quays, there will be 222,000 lucky beneficiaries of an invitation distributed by local authorities, spread on both sides of the waterway, along the 6 km of the parade.
And 50,000 installed on crossing bridges.
At the same time, “a certain number of sets will be installed both on the docks and on the Seine, mainly outside the canal.
We will have approximately 25 floating establishments and 35 floating equipment that will be placed,” said Marc Guillaume, prefect of the Île-de-France region in the Senate, on March 5, during the hearing of the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin.
The senior official also returned to the incident of January 31, when, under the Sully Bridge, “a boat collided with arch 2, where the bridges descend downstream.
Expert reports are being carried out to be able to carry out the necessary work before the inauguration ceremony, both to break a cast iron hanging block and to restore the bridge."
Marc Guillaume wants to reassure: “In any case, we are not in a situation in which all this cannot be achieved before the opening ceremony."
Technical settings
More generally, the city of Paris should also make several “technical adjustments” to
the platforms
in the coming weeks to be able to celebrate the show designed by director Thomas Jolly.
“We discovered his artistic project a few weeks ago,” confirms Pierre Rabadan, deputy mayor of Paris in charge of sports.
There are a series of reinforcement works that will be carried out between now and the ceremony.
The objective is to ensure and organize what should be."
“But
there is nothing dangerous or irremediable
,” he clarified.
