The GDL strike has a significant impact on the Munich S-Bahn: most lines only run every hour.

Long-distance traffic to and from Munich is also massively affected.

Munich - The GDL train drivers' strike has begun, which is once again leading to significant restrictions on rail traffic to and from Munich.

Since Thursday, March 7th, at 2 a.m., passenger traffic has also been affected.

In Munich's city and regional transport, the S-Bahn is particularly affected.

However, all MVG vehicles – subway, trams and buses – run as planned.

According to the city, the BRB and the Vienna Westbahn will also not be on strike.

Rail strike in Munich: massive restrictions on the S-Bahn

According to the Munich S-Bahn, there will be “massive disruption” up to and including Friday, March 8th at 2 p.m.

However, all S-Bahn lines would run at least every hour.

According to the website, the following operations can be expected during the GDL strike:

  • “The S 1 line runs between Ostbahnhof and Freising every hour and does not go to the airport.

  • The S 2 line runs between Markt Schwaben and Dachau every 20 to 40 minutes, and on the other sections every hour.

  • The lines S 3, S 4, S 6 and S 7 run every hour.

  • The S 8 line runs between Pasing and the airport every 20 minutes, between Pasing and Germering every 20 to 40 minutes and between Germering and Herrsching every 60 minutes.

  • The S 20 line is no longer available.”

In addition, the Munich S-Bahn advises that all “non-essential trips” be canceled during the strike and postponed to another day.

GDL strike: Negotiations failed again – what that means for passengers

Long-distance travelers should find out about their connections before starting their journey.

The basic timetable only provides for a greatly reduced range of services, a spokeswoman for Deutsche Bahn said on Thursday morning.

According to the GDL, the strike will last until Friday at 1 p.m.

On Monday, the GDL called for a 35-hour strike in the collective bargaining dispute with the railway.

This is the fifth strike in the conflict that has been ongoing since November.

The railway expects severe restrictions on long-distance, regional and S-Bahn traffic nationwide - the whole of Bavaria is also affected.

The central point of contention in the collective bargaining is the union's demand to reduce the weekly working hours for shift workers from 38 to 35 hours without financial losses.

A four-week closed-door negotiation period collapsed last week despite the efforts of outside mediators.

The union now plans to conduct future strikes with significantly less notice than before.

There will also be massive restrictions at Munich Airport until Saturday morning, March 9th: Lufthansa ground staff are also on strike for a total of 60 hours.
