Lighthouses have a special fascination for tourists.

There are two record-breaking buildings on the North Sea in Lower Saxony.

Wangerooge – Lower Saxony is one of the top travel destinations in Germany.

The state has a lot to offer,

tourism

is booming: with the North Sea beach and sea, the Wadden Sea, and many sights.

There is a highlight to marvel at on the island of Wangerooge: the

highest lighthouse in Germany

is located there .

And not only that. In Lower Saxony, where one of the lowest natural points in Germany is located, not only is the highest lighthouse in the entire Federal Republic, but also the highest on the German mainland.

67.20 meters high: the lighthouse in Lower Saxony holds a German record

The measure of all things is in the northwest of the East Frisian island of Wangerooge.

With its height of 67.20 meters, the New Wangerooge Lighthouse

tops

all other mostly red and white striped navigation signs on the North Sea and Baltic Sea.

The sea fire, which glows red all around, is located at a height of 61.22 meters and is one of the highest beacons in Germany.

The reinforced concrete tower was built between 1966 and 1967 and was put into operation on November 7, 1969.

It is based on 24 foundation piles and an underground base.

The diameter at the base is 6.8 meters.

Originally the facade consisted of white and red ceramic tiles.

In 1982 they gave way to aluminum cladding.

The new Wangerooge lighthouse is operated fully automatically

The New Wangerooge Lighthouse serves as a maritime, guiding and warning light for shipping.

The guiding light guides large ships into the entrance to the Jade fairway towards the Weser.

A side light acts as an orientation and warning light for ships.

The lighthouse, which is connected to the public power grid, is controlled and monitored fully automatically by the Wilhelmshaven Waterways and Shipping Office.

If the supply breaks down, a diesel generator in the basement supplies the electricity in an emergency.

Until operations began in 1969, the

old lighthouse

on Wangerooge, completed in 1856, served as a guide for ships.

But because the technology was outdated and the beacon was only 36 meters high, it was decided to build a new one.

Today the 39 meter high old lighthouse serves tourist purposes.

Campen lighthouse with a height of 65.30 meters is unrivaled on the German mainland

The New Lighthouse is not open to the public.

If you could climb up the tower, you would have to overcome 284 steps.

It is still worthwhile as an excursion destination due to its impressive height.

While Wangerooge has the highest lighthouse in all of Germany,

Lower Saxony

also has the second highest lighthouse and at the same time the highest lighthouse on the German mainland.

The Campen lighthouse

is located in the municipality of Krummhörn, northwest of Emden

.

The longest flea market in Germany takes place once a year, a good 75 kilometers away.

As a free-standing steel truss tower, it differs significantly from the classic red and white striped lighthouses.

Its construction - a framework made of riveted iron parts with a triangular cross-section - is similar to that of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

There is a stairwell in the middle.

Germany's oldest still functioning diesel engine in the Campen lighthouse

The total height of the Campen lighthouse is 65.30 meters, the fire height is 61.20 meters.

This makes him just two meters shorter than the leader on

Wangerooge

.

There is still an original diesel engine from 1906 in the engine room - the oldest still functioning in Germany.

Today the Campen lighthouse serves as a daytime marker; at night its beacon guides ships past Borkum to the mouth of the Ems.

It was extensively renovated in 2020/2021.

Since then it has shone bright red again.

Anyone who climbs the 308 steps to the lower gallery between mid-March and early November will be rewarded with a wonderful view of the island of Borkum or Emden on clear days.

Lower Saxony is also home to Germany's most popular national park.
