Setting a milestone for local public transport (ÖPNV) in the region: That was the goal of the model project “Mittelschwaben-Unterallgäutakt 2.0”, or MUT for short.

Now the federal government has fallen victim to austerity measures.

The federal government does not support the project and has canceled it.

Mindelheim - The message was received by the Unterallgäu district office when the mobility committee of the Unterallgäu district council had just voted unanimously in favor of the project.

This is a bitter disappointment for everyone who had hoped that the project could make public transport in the region significantly more attractive.

Alex Eder, District Administrator Unterallgäu

No public transport funding for “MUT” - disappointment about the end in Unterallgäu

The federal government's decision is also disappointing because the district administration has dealt intensively with the project.

“We wanted to get this started, even though the district’s financial scope is becoming increasingly narrow.

Because well-developed public transport is absolutely important to us,” explains Eder.

After initial concerns, there was a solution in which the district could have saved costs through efficient use of funds but still co-financed the project.

“In the end, everyone was united behind the project and the mobility committee voted unanimously in favor of it after a specially scheduled second round of discussions.

The end suddenly came almost at the same time.

That is bitter."

Abrupt end despite many efforts

A total of 24.25 million euros were earmarked for various improvements in the transport area of the Mittelschwaben Transport Association (VVM), which consists of the districts of Unterallgäu and Günzburg as well as the city of Memmingen.

These ranged from particularly easy-to-use digital ticketing to the installation of a new mobility platform, the expansion of cycle times and service times and the introduction of an e-bike sharing system to the upgrading of stops - for example by equipping them with screens with real time -Declarations.

Measures must be examined

The federal government had promised funding of 80 percent of the costs for the project, which should be transferred to other areas if successful.

MUT, along with four other projects, was selected as a “particularly outstanding project” from 67 project sketches submitted nationwide.

Whether and when individual measures from the project in Unterallgäu can possibly be implemented without federal funding must be examined and, if necessary, decided by the district committees.
