There isn't much difference between young and old.

A generation coach explains why there is still a crisis and what managers can do.

Skip your morning fitness class for a meeting at work?

This young man doesn't see that.

The reaction “Are you kidding me?” is a good example of how quickly generations clash.

Especially in the workplace.

But how do these conflicts arise and what can we do about them?

According to generation coach Ulrike Straßer, every younger generation is seen as “rebellious” by the older one.

She explains to BuzzFeed News Germany,

a portal from

IPPEN.MEDIA,

why this doesn't apply to Gen Z and where she sees real opportunities for communication to still be successful.

Even though it is often attributed to Gen Z, they are not that rebellious.

“We spend two thirds of our time on our job” – hence the problem

According to the expert, the fact that friction occurs between people of different age groups is primarily due to two factors: lack of understanding and envy.

For previous generations it was normal to have three years of experience on the job before they were allowed to say anything.

But Generation Z expects something different.

According to Straßer, this leads to a lack of understanding and envy.

The supposed rebel generation doesn't want anything absurd.

“We spend two thirds of our time on our job.

Then why don’t we make it pleasant for ourselves?” For Gen Z, it’s primarily about being able to reconcile the things in life that are essential to them.

How leaders can solve the problem

“Our older people’s jaws quickly drop when young people say in the first conversation, I really want to make sure that we stick to the 40 hours,” says Straßer.

The expert explains the attitude as follows: “Young people have noticed from their parents and grandparents that they work a lot, work too much, and that in the end it only paid off in a few cases.”

But: Have a good work life -Balance is discussed in advance, coexistence is much easier.

Because the younger people actually just wanted respect and appreciation for their time and needs.

According to Straßer, it is wrong that the generations simply do not understand each other.

But there needs to be more exchange.

“I think that understanding and awareness needs to be promoted.

And that is actually the duty of every manager, that regular get-togethers or workshops are held, that people simply exchange ideas about what is important to them, what their needs are, so that we understand each other.”
