Despite the isolationist tendencies under Biden, Habeck is relying on transatlantic cooperation in the USA.
He also finds clear words for Trump.
Washington, DC – Robert Habeck (The Greens), the deputy head of government and economics minister, has made his way to the United States.
His goal: to advocate for stronger transatlantic cooperation and less protectionism.
In a press release from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, he emphasized: “Only together can we overcome the current geopolitical conflicts, advance the green transformation and at the same time strengthen the innovative strength of our transatlantic economic area in the long term.”
However, tendencies towards isolation are also evident in the government under Joe Biden, said Habeck during a press conference on Wednesday evening (March 6, local time).
His three-day trip took him to New York, Washington and Chicago, where he held discussions with government and business representatives.
Habeck's optimism justified?
USA continues to support Trump and protectionism
Donald Trump, the leading candidate in the Republican primary, has already vowed to raise tariffs if he is re-elected.
In this case, the Cologne Institute of the German Economy predicts losses worth billions for the German economy.
Although Habeck did not want to comment explicitly on the US election campaign, he still addressed clear words to Trump.
Habeck noted in retrospect that Donald Trump had “broken” all forms of cooperation.
“This cannot be in the interests of the Americans.
Nationalism harms the economy, harms peace and harms the people,” he was quoted as saying by the
AFP
news agency .
Habeck had already warned in December of problems in the arms industry if Trump were re-elected.
Siegfried Russwurm, President of the Federation of German Industries, accompanied Habeck on his trip to the USA.
He warned: “Not everyone in the US is convinced of this,” referring to the shared growth in the US and Germany.
A 2023 Chicago Council poll showed that two-thirds of Americans continue to support restrictions on imported goods to protect American jobs - a trend that is increasing among Republicans.
