A former Google engineer has been accused of stealing artificial intelligence technology from Mountain View while secretly working for two Chinese companies.
The Department of Justice arrested Linwei Ding, a Chinese national, and charged him with theft of trade secrets for which he faces up to 10 years in prison.
“The Department of Justice will not tolerate the theft of artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies that can jeopardize our national security,” Justice Secretary Merrick Garland said.
“We will protect our sensitive technologies from falling into the hands of those who shouldn't have them,” Garland adds.
“The theft of innovative technology and trade secrets from American companies can cost jobs and have devastating economic and national security consequences,” highlights FBI chief Christopher Wray.
