A piece of Geretsried history appeared on the construction site for a daycare center.

Historical relics from the war period came to light there.

Geretsried

– The excavators recently rolled in on Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Straße.

As reported, a new daycare center is to be built there.

On a Monday afternoon, work there is in full swing.

But Martin Bruckner is not interested in the construction site.

Rather, what was found during the work.

For some, what appeared on the site opposite the Haus Elisabeth retirement home are simply stones that have since been daubed with graffiti.

But the Geretsrieder knows that there is much more to it.

Bruckner, who is also involved in the Historical Geretsried working group, researched what these stony relics might once have been.

Ammunition factories should actually have been built closer to Munich

“Before the ammunition factories were built, there was only forest everywhere,” explains Bruckner.

During the Second World War, explosives were manufactured in the factories of Dynamit Aktiengesellschaft (DAG) and Deutsche Sprengchemie (DSC).

There were over 600 buildings.

Actually, the ammunition factories should have been built closer to Munich, in Forstenrieder Park, “but the Nazis prevented that,” says Bruckner.

Building further out was intended to prevent them from being bombed.

They also wanted to preserve the local recreation area in the south of Munich.

The factories in Geretsried were also bombed.

During an American air raid in 1945, many bombs rained down on what is now the city.

Gravel was extracted there with the crane

During the construction work for the new daycare center, a rectangular stone foundation came to light.

Bruckner suspects that this is the foundation of a stationary crane.

“It was probably used to extract gravel.” It was necessary for the production of concrete.

And the concrete in turn was used to build the bunkers and buildings for the ammunition factories.

“They had very thick walls,” says the Geretsrieder.

And concrete was mainly used for this because iron was needed to build tanks.

Gravel was mined here from around 1938 to 1941.

“There was a break in between,” says Bruckner, “because the course of the war was positive and people thought that the plant was no longer needed here.” But then, when they saw that victory wasn’t so close after all, things quickly changed again been put into operation.

Relics only became visible through felling work

Bruckner has known the stone witnesses on Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Strasse for a long time.

He has been interested in the city's rich history for many years.

“I knew about the relics here, but the felling made them really visible.” Bruckner photographed the remains of the foundation.

It is important to him to preserve these relics in this way.

“You don’t know how long this will all be here.”

According to the press office of the city of Geretsried, the remains must now be professionally removed and then disposed of.

As reported, a ten-group daycare center is being built on Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Straße.

The construction pit is currently being dug and the area is being straightened.

The shell construction is scheduled to begin in April.

Until the new daycare center is finished, the former location of the Caritas daycare center Blechkiste on Tattenkofener Straße will provide relief from the tense care situation with a container.
