The Don Bosco Sisters are giving up their sponsorship of the daycare center in Benediktbeuern, which they have had for decades.

The reason is staff shortages.

Benediktbeuern –

“It is a drastic event for the community,” said Benediktbeuern Mayor Anton Ortlieb on Wednesday, regretting the news of the Don Bosco sisters.

They invited people to a press conference to publicly announce that they would be giving up ownership of the daycare center at the end of the calendar year.

Benediktbeuern: Sisters will hand over sponsorship at the end of 2024

Provincial leader Sister Petra Egeling explained: “We were on site for a long time and accompanied many changes during our sponsorship.” She recalled the closing of the youth hostel and the opening of the new crèche groups.

“After a long process, we in the provincial council have now come to the decision to give up sponsorship.” For the sisters, this step is “very regrettable,” but: “Due to the lack of human resources, it is no longer possible for us.” Especially With a view to the necessary expansion, the sisters realized “that we can no longer muster these forces.”

Municipality of Benediktbeuern is looking for a new provider from 2025

The employees and the parents' council had already been informed before the press conference.

The municipality, which also owns the property, must now find a new sponsor by the end of the year.

“Don-Bosco child care has been available in the village for over 70 years.

I very much hope to be able to take the family feeling that the facility has always conveyed, as well as the spirit of Don Bosco, with me into the future." Ortlieb rules out the possibility that the community will act as a sponsor in the future.

“It is important to us that parents continue to have a choice.

We already have a small community kindergarten.” This is also where we see the big challenges, continued managing director Michael Herrmann.

“Given the size of the facility, we think it makes more sense to find a provider that specializes in child care.”

Benediktbeuern: Expansion of the daycare center is being planned

The facility currently has three crèche groups with space for 12 children each and two kindergarten groups with 25 children each.

“We are working on requirements planning, then we will see what capacities we need in the future,” says the town hall boss with a view to a planned expansion.

Anna Feichtner, provincial economist for the Don Bosco Sisters, emphasized: “With a view to an upcoming expansion, now is the right time to clear the way.” It is advisable that the new sponsor be involved in the planning from the start.

“It is also very important to us that the change of provider takes place with little disruption for children, parents and employees.” The sisters hope that the spirit of Don Bosco will be preserved educationally even with their departure.

Three key words of the Don Bosco concept are “education, support and home,” says Sister Petra Egeling.

“We also very much hope that the community will find a good new partner.”

Employees must be taken over by a new provider - management will change

Speaking of employees: The facility's staff currently consists of three sisters - including the kindergarten director - and ten other employees.

“Of course, the employees must all be taken on by the provider,” reassures Herrmann.

“The management will change, however, as the sisters will leave the facility when the sponsorship ends.” What this step means for the future of the Don Bosco sisters in Benediktbeuern is not yet clear at this point.

“Deliberations are ongoing, but nothing can be said publicly about it yet.” The only thing that is certain is that the community will not be separated, said the provincial economist.

According to Ortlieb, the local council will work intensively to find a new sponsor.

“We will hold preliminary discussions and go to tender as quickly as possible.” Hermann: “It is important for us to find a new partner quickly.

But this must also be socially acceptable and conceptually appropriate.”
