Gilching

– They are now noticeable: flowering meadows that are being created in the municipality of Gilching wherever there is a suitable area.

According to Christine Hammel from the Office for Environmental and Climate Protection, the aim is to create a habitat for a variety of insects and birds through even more species-rich flowering areas and thus make an important contribution to species protection.

After more than ten years of experience, efforts for ecological care should now be intensified on a larger scale, she explained at the meeting of the local council's environmental committee this week.

Hammel listed a number of locations that have now been upgraded to flowering areas, including at the senior center on Weßlinger Strasse, on the market square behind the shops, on the brownfield sites at the S-Bahn station as well as on St.-Gilgener-Strasse, on Frauwiesenweg and on Landsberger Straße.

“We brought a gardener on board with all of our campaigns.

Now we know where something makes sense,” explained Hammel.

For example, the attempt to create a flowering area on the small island of the roundabout on Starnberger Weg turned out to be pointless.

Smaller areas are probably better suited for planting perennials, but larger areas should be used for flowering meadows in the future.

However, on the traffic island on Landsberger Strasse, the first project, the planting was successful.

Among other things, mineral mulch in the form of grit was used there in October 2023 (we reported), and seasonal planting is only carried out on the edge area.

“But we want the sub so that the emphasis is no longer on a layer of gravel that is so present, but rather on a well-adapted substrate,” explained Hammel.

The gardeners would therefore also attend a few seminars in the near future.

Pia Vilsmayer (FW) said that excessive flower and perennial growth on traffic islands always hinders visibility in traffic.

“We very much welcome the fact that more habitat is being created for insects and birds.

But attention should also be paid to traffic safety.” That is already the focus, replied Hammel.

“We noticed it and there have already been some complaints.

But we now have an idea that a certain level will be maintained in the future.”

The committee members unanimously decided to redesign around 4,000 square meters in the near future.

For this purpose, a total cost of 5,000 euros will be included in the budget.
