Ukraine manages to destroy Russian ships with relatively simple, small sea drones.

What makes “Magura V5” so dangerous?

Munich – Ukraine was apparently able to destroy two Russian warships within three weeks.

On February 14th, the large landing ship “Caesar Kunikov” sank off the Crimea, and on March 5th the corvette “Sergei Kotov” suffered serious damage.

In both cases, maritime drones were used successfully.

According to the website

Oryx

, which focuses on documenting military equipment losses, the Sergei Kotov was the 22nd Russian ship destroyed by either Ukrainian naval or air drones or by ground or air-launched missiles since the start of the Ukraine war became.

Kiev claims to have destroyed 26 ships.

What is true now is difficult to understand.

One thing is clear: although Ukraine does not have its own naval fleet, it is inflicting significant losses on Russia at sea.

“As a result of an attack by MAGURA V5 naval drones, the Russian ship of Project 22160 Sergei Kotov suffered damage to the stern, starboard and port sides,” the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said on Telegram.

“The cost of the sunken ship is around 65 million US dollars.” The unmanned surface ships “Magura V5”, also known colloquially as sea drones, were used in both cases.

“Ukrainian drones are fairly primitive devices,” military expert David Sharp told

.

Armies of developed countries have water drones that approach enemy ships underwater or semi-submerged.

They can also fire guided missiles.

As far as the technical characteristics of “Magura V5” are concerned, the manufacturer, a Ukrainian company called SpecialTechnoExport (STE), is keeping a low profile.

Kyiv Post

released specifications after features emerged at a 2023 trade fair in Turkey.

Accordingly, the maximum range of “Magura-V5” sea drones is 833 kilometers and the maximum speed is 42 knots (78 km/h).

The length of the surface ships is 5.5 meters and they can transport 320 kilograms.

Novaya Gazeta Europe

lists the price as $270,000.

Last year, Ukraine announced that it would increase production of “Magura V5”.

Ukraine sinks Russia's warships: Video shows destructive power of Magura V5 sea drones

The Directorate of Military Intelligence of Ukraine purchased “Magura V5” and continued to develop it.

According to

the Kyiv Post,

remote control systems were installed and explosive charges were modified on objects.

A video that is supposed to show the attack of such drones on the “Caesar Kunikov” documents that it is hardly possible to repel an attack from several “Magura V5s”.

“Up to ten drones are used in each attack, which allows you to approach the target from different directions, distribute roles in the group and determine the order of the attack.

Not a single Russian ship will be able to repel such an attack today,” Roman Svitan, military expert and reserve colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, told

Novaya Gazeta Europe.
