Mathematics and German in primary school need to be practiced more intensively with the students.

This is shown by the results of the PISA study.

The reduction in subjects in music, art and works in primary school is causing waves in Bavaria.

Ebersberg parents think the discussion misses the point.

Ebersberg

– Bavaria is the only federal state with three hours of religious instruction in the primary school timetable.

The fact that cuts are now being made in works, art and music in order to cope with the frightening Pisa test results in German and math is met with incomprehension by many parents.

However, there are doubts among parent representatives at the Ebersberg elementary and middle school as to whether the problem lies much deeper.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Ebersberg newsletter.)

Father would like more targeted support

Florian Treitner (46) from the parents' council says about the planned subject shifts: "Smoke candles are being lit here while the whole system is sick." Instead of playing individual subjects off against each other, a complete reform is needed.

With the Bavarian fixation on the Abitur, the other types of schools fell behind.

Treitner, father of two children at primary and middle school, brings up a course system with different levels, as already exists in other countries, but also in North Rhine-Westphalia, in order to better promote individual talents.

He praises the Ebersberg school management for doing everything possible.

But the Ministry of Culture is “too far away” and the Pisa test is outdated.

“There are problems everywhere.”

Mother criticizes the backlog of reforms in the education system

Lakhena Leng, Ebersberg's third mayor and outgoing chairwoman of the school support association, also sees a reform backlog in the education system.

“We have to do more than just shift lessons back and forth.” The world has changed completely, but the school system has been the same for decades.

“I know that the schools are making an effort,” says Leng, mother of two children (8 and 10).

But in the context of constantly changing job profiles and the advance of artificial intelligence, she doubts that school material will even equip children with the skills they will really need later.

Eliminating creative subjects, of all things, is the wrong approach.

Leng doesn’t want to argue against religion or ethics either: “Education of values is important!” she says.

“We’re asking ourselves the wrong questions.”

The headmaster wants to wait for implementation first

It is still too early for school principal Alexander Bär to comment on the discussion as the specific implementation has not been clarified.

“Only then can we say whether it is a step forward or sideways.”
