In 1910, a biplane managed to take off from an American ship for the first time.
And, from 1912, France adapted the auxiliary cruiser “Foudre” to carry seaplanes.
But it was the Pacific War, from 1941, which established the strategic interest of aviation at sea.
After the Liberation, to deploy it, France relied on the "Arromanches", then the "La Fayette" and the "Bois Belleau", purchased from the English and American navies.
During the Cold War, the country built the “Clemenceau” (commissioned in 1961) and the “Foch” (1963), which had, as a crucial asset, catapults to project heavier aircraft.
