A new funeral hall at the Höfen cemetery has been planned in Grafrath for some time.

The local council has now approved a building application for it.

Grafrath – But that doesn’t mean that the building will actually be built soon.

In addition to a long approval process, the municipal finances stand in the way.

The approval of the building application does not give the starting signal for construction, emphasized Mayor Markus Kennerknecht (independent).

The application only wants to check whether the project can be approved.

That means: Now the district office and the monument protection authority also have to examine the plans.

The latter is allowed to have a say because the Höfen church is a monument.

No concrete statements

“So far we have not received any concrete statements from the authorities,” said Kennerknecht.

This is now intended to be enforced with the building application.

“We can then consider whether and how we should carry out the construction, provided we have the financial means for it again at some point.” The municipality currently lacks the money for such a project.

Fundamental criticism of the building application came from the ranks of the Greens, for whom the planned building is generally too large.

Parliamentary group member Arthur Mosandl advocated stopping the planning completely because the planned implementation by 2026 would not be sustainable due to finances.

Josef Heldeisen (SPD) countered that the approval process would take a long time and that statements from the authorities should definitely be obtained.

“Financing is then a different issue.”

This was also the opinion of the majority.

The building application was approved with 11:4 votes and will now go to the district office.
