ISS debris could fall to Earth today.
Before re-entering the atmosphere, the space debris flies over Germany and the Allgäu several times.
Kempten - As the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief (BBK) reports, a larger space object is expected to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere today, March 8th.
The object is a 2.6-ton discarded battery pack that was separated from the ISS in 2021.
Danger from debris from the ISS for Kempten's population?
Space debris flies over the Allgäu
According to analyzes by the German Space Situational Center, it could be that parts of the battery pack survive re-entry into the atmosphere and reach the Earth's surface.
Before the object enters the atmosphere, it will fly over Germany several times.
According to the BBK, there are three possible routes, one of which leads over the Allgäu.
Accordingly, the space debris is expected to fly over the south of Baden-Württemberg and the southern Allgäu (Upper and Ostallgäu) at around 8:50 p.m. local time.

However: “A threat to Germany is currently viewed as statistically unlikely,” says the BBK.
If the assessment changes, the BBK will provide information on its website.
