The Ickingen historian and journalist Dr.

Sybille Krafft has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon.

Her name is inseparably linked to the bathhouse in Wolfratshausen-Waldram.

Munich/Icking - On behalf of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Bavaria's Minister of Art and Science, Markus Blume, has given the Ickinger Dr.

Sybille Krafft presented with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

At the award in the State Theater at Gärtnerplatz in Munich, Blume emphasized the commitment of the journalist and author, whose name is inextricably linked to the Badehaus documentation site in Waldram, to the culture of remembrance in the Free State.

Krafft is a “bridge builder”.

The historian with a doctorate, born in Munich in 1958, has been working as an author at BR since 1983 and has been in charge of many documentaries and TV reports on the subject of monument protection in Bavaria.

Founding member Krafft was at the head of the Wolfratshausen Historical Association for more than 20 years, raising public awareness of the history of the Loisach town and vigorously campaigning for the preservation of historically valuable buildings in the Isar Valley.

The history trail in Wolfratshausen also goes back to an initiative by Ickinger.

She also doesn't shy away from clear words when historical cultural assets are neglected.

In 2017 she was awarded the Bavarian Monument Protection Medal.

Krafft saw this award not only as an appreciation, but as an incentive to continue to stubbornly intervene: “You can't do nothing if the evidence of the past is to be destroyed.” The then Minister of Education, Ludwig Spaenle, attested to Krafft in his laudatory speech: “She is shy also not before clear words when historical cultural assets are neglected.”

Krafft initiated the mammoth bathhouse project in Waldram in 2012

When the demolition of the bathhouse in the Waldram district of Wolfratshausen had actually already been decided in 2012, Krafft initiated a project that can now be described as her life's work: Together with other volunteers, she founded the association “Citizens for the Waldram-Föhrenwald Bathhouse”.

The building on Kolpingplatz was built by the National Socialists in 1940 for employees and forced laborers at the nearby ammunition factory.

After World War II, the US Army operated a camp for Jewish displaced persons – up to 6,000 survivors of the Holocaust.

They used the building and set up a mikvah in the basement.

Powerful.

What seemed impossible succeeded: the bathhouse remained standing, the volunteers invested a good 55,000 hours of work - and almost 185,000 euros of their own funds and donations.

Today, according to the association, the documentation site is “a lively place of remembrance, encounters and learning”.

The bathhouse has had more than 17,000 visitors since it opened, and the association has received, among other things, the Bridge Builder Prize from the SPD parliamentary group, the “Obermayer Award”, the Citizens’ Prize from the Sparkasse Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen and the cultural prize “Der Grüne Wanninger”, awarded by the district parliamentary group of the Greens.
