CDU leader Friedrich Merz believes freedom is more important than peace.
In recent years, people have gotten into the habit of saying that they want to live “in peace and freedom” in this country, Merz said on Friday at a regional conference on his party's new basic program in Stuttgart.
But that is the wrong order.
“Peace is not the most important thing.
Stuttgart - “There is peace in every cemetery.” Freedom is the most important thing for an open and liberal society.
“Only when there is freedom can there be peace.”
The Christian Democrats initiated the renewal of their basic program after losing power in the 2021 federal election.
In the draft for its new program, the CDU advocates a commitment to a dominant German culture and a relocation of asylum procedures.
