Whether conscription is coming and what it might look like is the subject of controversial debate.
The military commissioner and the reservist association want to rethink conscription.
Munich - After Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) announced that the reintroduction of compulsory military service would be examined, the exact design is now being discussed.
Pistorius has not yet provided an answer as to whether compulsory military service or general service is required.
The military commissioner Eva Högl (SPD) and the reservist association are in favor of new concepts.
In her view, conscription, as it still applied and was practiced in Germany in 2011, was not an option, said Högk.
Rather, the military representative spoke
out in favor of compulsory service to the newspapers of the
Funke Media Group .
This should not only extend to the Bundeswehr, but also to the areas of social, cultural and environmental affairs.
Pistorius' compulsory military service: Högl calls for an open-ended debate
The ongoing debate shows that there is still no consensus in the German party landscape on the question of reintroducing compulsory military service.
The reintroduction of compulsory military service is met with resistance, particularly by the traffic light parties.
Högl emphasizes that questions about compulsory service are answered differently in society.
She therefore called for a careful, comprehensive and open-ended discussion.
“It’s about our society and what everyone could and should do for our society.
I am convinced that it would be good for our society if everyone got involved for a while,” said the Commissioner for the Armed Forces.
The reservist association also wants to expand conscription to other organizations
Patrick Sensburg, the President of the Bundeswehr Reservists Association, also does not want to go back to the old conscription.
Rather, the compulsory year should extend to all organizations “that maintain our country’s defense readiness in the case of national defense.”
In the newspapers of the
Funke media group
, Sensburg demands that duty in the areas of civil defense and emergency services should also be possible.
Pistorius finds out about the Swedish conscription model
Defense Minister Pistorius sees the Swedish model as a model for German conscription.
As a result, young women and men are obliged to enlist, but only parts of one year group are selected for military service.
The Defense Minister is currently finding out more about this model in Norway and Sweden on his trip to Scandinavia.

However, Pistorius announced on Tuesday (March 5) that a quick decision is not expected on the question of compulsory military service.
Which is the right model for German military or military service and whether a decision can be expected as early as 2025 or later will only become clear in the debate that is now taking place.
