Highlights: New initiative stands for more togetherness and dialogue. Young people say it can't stay like this. And want to do something about it. The goal: to mend the rift in the local community that they also want to have identified in their own words: without misanthropy, without prejudice, but with dialogue, with a commitment to diversity and a new cohesion. They want to set up colorful chairs on the market square on Sunday, March 17th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m and ask passers-by to spontaneously talk to others there.

The general mood in Markt Schwaben is in the dumps.

Young people say it can't stay like this.

And want to do something about it.

Markt Schwaben -

December 18, 2023 was the day of an information event on the subject of asylum homes in the Theater im Burgerfeld.

Andreas Gammel and Iulia Moaca were also there.

According to their own words, the two young Swabians noticed unpleasantly before the start that the AfD had tried to take advantage of the already slightly heated mood in the town.

The piece of paper that was distributed in front of the hall contained questions, almost all of which were later thrown into the debate, recalls Iulia Moaca.

Two and a half months later, the 30-year-old and Gammel, also 30, still talk about how the evening was the moment for them to realize that something had changed in their hometown.

“It bothered and surprised us that such opinions could come to light,” adds Florian Kaiser.

The young people have known each other for many years; they graduated from the FMG together in 2012.

Like Alina Hartmann, 26, they all grew up at school with the FMG motto, namely to stand up against racism and for courage.

“We have to do something about it,” reports Andres Gammel about the initial reaction from him and his specialists.

After all, there are enough other people in the area whose opinion is completely different than the one conveyed by the evening in the theater hall.

Gammel says that one side of the town is very loud for him - and the other is not visible and not organized.

People should get back into dialogue and listen to each other

In any case, after a short consideration, the clique decided to change that and has now founded an initiative called “Market Swabia with each other” and whose name is the program for the first activities that have long been planned.

Together with the “Spring Awakening” association in Munich, they want to set up colorful chairs on the market square on Sunday, March 17th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and ask passers-by to spontaneously talk to others there.

Talk about anything.

If necessary, also about the currently hot topic of asylum.

The goal: to mend the rift in the local community that they also want to have identified in their own words: without misanthropy, without prejudice, but with dialogue, with a commitment to diversity and a new cohesion.

A solidarity that they no longer recognized in the market town council.

Often, the group admits, they have never seen council meetings live.

According to their own words, they experienced the last meeting with very mixed feelings.

Commitment to diversity and tolerance

The public incitement to dialogue on March 17th should be just the beginning.

Here, so to speak, a format is adopted that Iulia Moaca knows from events in Haidhausen during the Corona period.

She emphasizes that the chair campaign is not an information event, but an invitation for everyone to talk to each other.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Because, as Florian Kaiser puts it, one has the impression that many in the town do not feel heard at the moment, the mood is in the basement and they simply dream that Markt Schwaben will quickly become as colorful as it was in their youth got to know and love.

Diversity is the key word that comes up often in conversations with young people.

According to Alina Hartmann, it is the only thing that makes the Swabian market more lively again.

And Florian Kaiser adds: “We don't want to and can't show a solution for the Ziegelstadel, we're more concerned with the tone of the last few weeks.” That's why, says Iulia Moaca, saying certain things has become socially acceptable again.

On Sunday the initiative will also launch its homepage: www.ms-miteinander.de.
