The “Let’s Dance” fans are a tight-knit community, every episode of the show is absorbed.

Nevertheless, the show had to take a break for two years, and hardly anyone knows the reason today!

In April 2006, prominent amateurs danced across the dance floor for the first time on “Let's Dance”.

Today the show has become an integral part of RTL's annual program.

Whether it's the classic show, professional challenge or Christmas special, the station offers enough highlights for dance enthusiasts.

But that was not always so!

“Let's Dance” canceled after 2 seasons - RTL cancels dance show in 2008 despite strong ratings

In the first season, “Let's Dance” was still in its infancy: there wasn't a large fan community yet and the professional dancers, who are now inseparable, were still strangers to each other.

At that time, other presenters, Hape Kerkeling and Nazan Eckes, also led through the program and even more!

Unlike now, “Let's Dance” did not yet have a prime time slot in 2006.

Viewers could only see the popular dance show at 9:15 p.m.

Nevertheless, the show was able to establish itself among many viewers who eagerly watched the television on Friday evenings.

As expected, things continued straight away in 2007 with the second season, in which many of the “Let's Dance” professional dancers who were still active were already there.

But then suddenly it was over!

Instead of “Let’s Dance”: “DSDS”, “Das Supertalent” and “Mission Hollywood” on RTL

In 2008, RTL addressed viewers with astonishing news: There would be no third season of “Let's Dance” for the time being.

And this despite the fact that the ratings were convincing and the advertising partners had already been told a start date.

So how did the sudden change happen?

The show's press spokesman at the time, Frank Rendez, explained that those responsible wanted to focus on other formats.

The “Let’s Dance” press spokesman revealed even more: It wasn’t just the then young formats “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” and “Das Supertalent” that were more promising.

The station also prioritized Til Schweiger's casting show "Mission Hollywood" - which turned out to be a blatant misjudgment.

After “Let’s Dance” break 2008/2009 – dance show returns successfully

While “Let's Dance” achieved market shares of up to 26.9% in 2006 and 2007, “Mission Hollywood” did not have good ratings - on the contrary.

The show was moved from prime time to midday due to poor ratings.

But even when the dance show was canceled, the station kept other seasons open.

“However, we can imagine showing a new season of 'Let's Dance' next year,” said the press spokesman in 2009. And that's how it should happen.

A year later, the third season was successfully broadcast on RTL.

Although the “Let's Dance” ratings broke ancient records in 2024, the show also impressed in 2010 after a two-year break with an 18.5% market share.

Since the show has been running at 8:15 p.m. from season 7, no one has doubted the strength of the ratings anymore.
