On the occasion of International Women's Day, VdK President Bentele is calling for women in particular to benefit more from the basic pension supplement.
Berlin – The traffic light pension plans of Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) and Christian Lindner (FDP) have just come to light with pension package II.
Apparently Heil also wants civil servants to pay into the pension fund.
But the discussion about pensions shifts in a slightly different direction on International Women's Day.
Basic pension for women: Not satisfied with supplement for pensioners
On the occasion of International Women's Day, VdK President Verena Bentele is calling for quick changes to the basic pension so that more pensioners can benefit from it.
The basic pension adds value to low retirement incomes, Bentele told the newspapers of the
Funke media group
on Friday.
“But overall we are not satisfied that far fewer women and men are receiving the contract than originally planned.
Instead of three million, it was recently just over a million.”
In addition, the average payout amount is only 80 euros, said the president of the social association VdK.
Bentele called for the partner's income credit to be abolished.
She criticized that it was not only “a huge bureaucratic effort”, but also contradicted the actual goal of the basic pension.
Basic pension for pensioners: Supplement should “not be a handout”
“It shouldn’t be a handout, but rather an appreciation of an individual’s life’s work.” Bentele also called for a reform of family taxation.
Spousal splitting should be replaced by a taxation model for families, she said.
“The marriage certificate should not be the decisive factor for tax support, but rather the fact whether someone is raising children or not,” argued the VdK president.
The German Bundestag agreed on the basic pension supplement at the beginning of July 2020.
This is not a stand-alone benefit, but rather a plus to the existing pension.
It is paid out together with the statutory pension.
The height is determined individually.
Full basic pension supplement for pensioners of up to 1,250 euros per month
Pensioners with a monthly income of up to 1,250 euros for single people receive the full basic pension supplement.
For marriages or registered civil partnerships, the limit is 1,950 euros.
If the exemption amount is exceeded, 60 percent of the income above it will be taken into account.
For incomes over 1,600 euros (couples: 2,300 euros), the portion above this amount is taken into account in full.

In order to receive the supplement, you must have at least 33 years of so-called basic pension periods.
These include, for example, periods with compulsory contributions from employment, periods of child-rearing and care periods, as well as times in which you received benefits for illness or rehabilitation.
Periods acquired abroad can also be included if these periods are to be taken into account for pension purposes under European law or a social security agreement.
On average, the income during your working life must have been less than 80 percent of the average salary.
Income is counted towards the basic pension supplement.
