The closer the ISS space debris the size of a small car rushes towards Earth, the more concrete its trajectory becomes.

According to the latest forecasts, the battery is now also flying over Bavaria.

Munich – So far, the discussion about the space debris that is currently hurtling toward Earth has taken place more in the middle of Germany.

According to previous forecasts, the focus was primarily on North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse.

The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Protection (BBK) has now published a new, much more specific flight path that limits the overflight over Bavaria to a few districts.

The flyover path over Swabia and Upper Bavaria.

The time has come at 8:50 p.m.

New overflight path for ISS space debris over Bavaria – these districts are affected

Accordingly, the three-ton battery the size of a small car, which was formerly part of the ISS, flies over the following districts (from northwest to southeast) at exactly 8:50 p.m. and 39 seconds.

Three five districts in Swabia and three districts in Upper Bavaria are affected, here is an overview:

  • Lindau

  • The southwestern half of the Unterallgäu district

  • Kempten

  • Ostallgäu

  • Oberallgäu

  • Memmingen

  • The Schongau part of the Weilheim-Schongau district (western half of the district)

  • Garmisch-Partenkirchen

  • In the Bad Tölz Wolfratshausen district the southernmost municipalities are Schlehdorf, Kochel am See, Jachenau, Lenggries

My district is affected – what do I have to do?

The flight path then leaves Bavaria and continues southeast through Tyrol and southeastern Europe.

A catwarning warning was triggered by civil protection for the warnings in question.

Now many are wondering what to do with such a warning.

First of all, nothing.

ISS space debris over Bavaria: Danger is “very low”

The chance of being hit by space debris is extremely small.

Expert Dr.

Björn Voss, director of the planetarium in Hamburg, classifies the danger as “very low”.

Accordingly, it is more likely to be injured in traffic before being hit by space debris.

You can read all of Voss' statements on the topic at

However, there are frequent incidents of space debris hitting inhabited areas and even destroying homes. Here is a brief overview.

Dangers from space debris – these incidents have already occurred

Sri Lanka, November 2020:

Some fragments of a Chinese missile launch fell in a village in Sri Lanka.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but homes and vehicles were damaged.

Jordan, April 2019:

Part of a Russian space station fell on a house in Jordan.

No one was injured, but the home sustained significant damage.

Tonga, October 2018:

A Chinese satellite crashed in Tonga, causing damage to an uninhabited area.

Argentina, September 2011:

A defective German research satellite crashed in Argentina and destroyed a residential building.

Luckily no one was injured.

Tip: A look towards the northwest at 8.50 p.m. may be worthwhile for the districts concerned

Anyone in Bavaria who is worried or simply wants to catch a glimpse of the Trumm now has a fairly precise indication of the overflight and is welcome to take a look outside at around 8:50 p.m.

Since the sky in the south of Bavaria is currently largely clear, you could even see something in the relevant districts.

(By the way: Our Bayern newsletter informs you daily about all the important stories from Bavaria.)

The battery pack originally had the speed of the ISS, i.e. around 28,000 km/h, but according to expert Voss, the earth's atmosphere will slow it down to around 300 km/h.

The part that does not burn up reaches the earth at this speed, which is rather leisurely by cosmic standards, and should therefore be easy to see.

If something changes in the object's trajectory, you will find out about it through an update here in this article.
