What do watches of the future look like in fiction?
Like the scratched steel quartz Microma with LCD display on Deckard/Harrison Ford's wrist, in Ridley Scott's
Blade Runner
(1982).
At the Marty McFly/Michael J. Fox Casio calculator in
Back to the Future
(1985).
And above all, from 1983, to Sophie's little watch in
Inspector Gadget
, the famous cartoon by Jean Chalopin, which allows her to communicate with her dog Finot, who has a connected collar!
And since the release of
Dune, part two
last week, the Desert Watch created by Hamilton worn on the forearm by the Fremen!
It was the director Denis Villeneuve who called on the watchmaker from the Swatch Group, who, although he never practices product placement on the big screen, has, on the other hand, had his own office in Hollywood for around fifteen years .
We can no longer count the appearances of his watches in the cinema since Shanghai Express… in 1932!
For this project, the Hamilton teams worked closely with the film's props manager, Doug Harlocker.
And imagined this
“desert watch”
resembling a vintage electronic chip, with a massive style, a metal effect patinated by the desert sands just enhanced with an almost phosphorescent blue element, like the eyes of the Fremen.
The brand reportedly had
"no knowledge of the device's function
," according to a press release, but submitted a series of sketches, guided by Frank Herbert's
Dune
story and Villeneuve's vision for the film ".
Fans of the novel remember the vibration shield blocking any rapid weapon, activated on the wrist by the soldiers of the Atreides clan.
But nothing in this second part indicates whether it is this function or another…
On the other hand, the two limited edition watches launched in parallel by Hamilton are used to tell the time.
The Ventura
Both are delivered in a collector's box inspired by the film.
