The condition of the local forest is documented in a report every three years.

The background to the procedure was now available in the forest in Wackersberg.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen – How good or bad is natural forest regeneration?

How severe is the damage caused by hoofed game?

Since 1986, answers to these questions have been provided by the forestry report, which is prepared every three years by the respective Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry (AELF).

It also forms the basis for the hunting authority's creation of shooting plans.

This year it's that time again.

Korbinian Wolf, head of the forestry department at AELF Holzkirchen, and district manager Elisabeth Necker showed how the inventory of the forest is actually carried out on Tuesday morning in an area on Wackersberger Flur.

Clothespins are also used

In order to determine the areas in which the forest will be examined, a grid grid is placed across the whole of Bavaria.

The closest taper area is then examined at the grid points.

According to precisely defined specifications, five additional points are determined within the area at which the specific examination is then carried out.

To do this, Necker needs a tape measure, ruler, yellow ribbon and different colored clothespins.

The latter is used to mark the 15 trees that are then actually examined.

Trees with a height between 20 centimeters and 1.30 meters plus up to five trees that are below the minimum height are included in the assessment.

The type of tree, the height and whether and where there is damage from browsing are recorded.

“But we only record browsing by hoofed game, not by rabbits, squirrels or other animals,” said Wolf.

Hunting directors, hunting owners and district owners are informed in advance about the inventory dates and can take part.

“It is important to us that we work transparently.

We have nothing to hide,” emphasized Wolf.

District manager Elisabeth Necker uses clothespins to mark which trees will be examined to record browsing damage.

550 grid points in two districts

Starting next week, AELF employees will be out and about in the forests.

There is a lot to do.

550 grid points, each with five areas to be examined, must be recorded in the two districts of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen and Miesbach.

Depending on the weather, the recording should be completed by mid-May.

The whole thing is then evaluated.

The first publication will take place in July with the opportunity for those involved to comment in writing and make comments.

These are checked before the actual report is created.

The Bavaria-wide result will then be presented to the state parliament in November.

At the same time, it is passed on to the hunting authority with a recommendation as to whether the shooting should be (significantly) increased, maintained or (significantly) reduced.

What does the browsing situation look like exactly?

The process involves taking a large number of samples, but these only allow a statistically reliable statement to be made about the entire conservancy community.

The so-called “area-wise statements” that the AELF has been producing since 2012 are more specific for individual hunting areas.

This provides a precise assessment of the browsing situation in a hunting area by the respective area manager.

This is done in areas where the bite is too high, threatens to become too high, or where it is explicitly requested.

“The rate in the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district is high.

We create these district-by-area statements for 80 to 90 percent of the areas,” said Wolf.

In order to make these assessments transparent, joint forest visits are offered during which the assessment is explained, “so that the whole thing is understandable,” said Wolf.
