During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating and drinking during the day.

After sunset we break the fast together.

The month of fasting is also celebrated in many places in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Mainz - For many Muslims in Rhineland-Palatinate, the traditional fasting month of Ramadan begins this Sunday.

The end of the fasting month is the Sugar Festival, which is celebrated from April 9th.

According to the Ministry of Culture, around 200,000 Muslims live in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Ramadan does not begin on the same day for all Muslims.

Depending on the lunar calendar or interpretation, the fasting month for believers begins on Sunday evening or Monday evening.

During the festival, believers abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex during the day.

Only in the evening, when the sun goes down, do people traditionally meet to break their fast (Iftar), which often begins with a date and a sip of water.

In Islam, the fasting month of Ramadan is considered one of the five basic obligations for believers.

Children, old and sick people and menstruating women are exempt from fasting.

At the so-called Sugar Festival, which lasts three days at the end of Ramadan, children receive gifts and sweets.

Volker Jung, church president of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau, and Beate Hofmann, bishop of the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck, addressed Muslims: “We wish you God’s accompanying blessing in the holy time ahead of you.

Ramadan mubarak!” said a statement on Thursday.
