Alois Schäfer recently celebrated his 95th birthday.

The celebrant loves his adopted home of Wolfratshausen.

In addition to Loisachstadt, Italy was always a country of longing in his life.

Wolfratshausen – Upper Bavaria and Italy: Two areas that couldn’t be more different.

For Alois Schäfer, they have one thing in common: he has found a home in both.

On Schäfer's 95th birthday, Wolfratshausen's town hall deputy Günther Eibl visited the celebrant in his house in Farchet and presented a book as a gift on behalf of the city.

Alois Schäfer complains that he can no longer ride his bike.

Nevertheless, he is surprisingly fit for his age: the senior stands during the entire conversation with the second mayor.

With a great deal of humor, he explains that he was born in an “ice-cold” winter in Thalfingen near Ulm.

The water was frozen until June this year.

“The midwife later told me that she had to bring snow and ice from outside and warm it on the stove to wash me.”

Innsbruck, Salzburg, Regensburg, Würzburg: I was everywhere.

And I liked it best here: in Wolfratshausen.

Anniversary Alois Schäfer

In 1944, when he was a teenager, Schäfer went on a bicycle tour through what was then the Greater German Reich.

“Innsbruck, Salzburg, Regensburg, Würzburg: I was everywhere.

And I liked it best here: in Wolfratshausen,” remembers the 95-year-old.

Back then he saw the Loisachtal and knew: “This is the area where I would like to live.”

After completing his apprenticeship as a carpenter's assistant, he initially worked as a vocational school teacher in various places in Germany.

The father of two children then returned to Wolfratshausen with his wife Irmgard.

However, he had to move again due to work.

It was only after retiring in 1991 that he settled back in his dream home.

Along with Wolfratshausen, Italy was always a country he longed for in his life

Alois Schäfer met his now deceased wife on the aforementioned bike tour.

“I drove past and she waved to me from the fence,” reports the celebratory person.

He then stayed in her hometown of Altötting for some time and got to know her better.

In 1957 they both married at the registry office in Burgkirchen.

On the recommendation of the diocese of Passau, they later had a church wedding in Rome.

After their marriage there, the couple traveled by train to Sicily.

Along with Wolfratshausen, Italy was always a country he longed for in his life, says the 95-year-old.

He learned the basics of the language in an Italian course.

“The teacher then advised me to go to Italy and practice speaking to people.

That’s what I did,” says the Wolfratshauser.

He found many Italian friends, even his best man is Italian.

Alois Schäfer can count on a large family.

The widower is the grandfather of seven grandchildren and the great-grandfather of five great-grandchildren.

He also spent his special day with his relatives.

After meeting the mayor, he celebrated his birthday with his family by eating pizza.
