Local politicians are increasingly becoming the target of malicious attacks.

This threatens to have consequences far beyond the individual affected - namely for the common good - comments editorial director Hans Moritz.

The first wave of refugees in 2015 and the Corona restrictions changed local politics.

It would be too polite if one were to complain about a harsher tone.

Mayors in particular sometimes face hatred that leaves them speechless.

The sad climax for now has been reached with Michael Stolze, who lives in the Erding district and is vacating the mayor's chair in Markt Schwaben after less than four years in office.

He no longer feels able to cope with the anger of the citizens and the belligerence in his committee.

But Georg Nagler, for example, is also facing demonstrations against the accommodation of refugees in Moosinning; many mayors know this. But anyone who openly attacks them, as recently happened in the Miesbach district, is completely missing the mark.

Neither district administrators nor mayors have the slightest influence on how many refugees arrive.

They are the last link in the chain because they have to accommodate people.

This is not fun for any representative.

It is to Nagler's credit that he stands up publicly and acknowledges the municipality's (moral) obligation and does not try to blame the district office.

Yes, local politicians also make mistakes, and mayors are also conscious of power.

But they are united by their desire to develop their places in the best possible way.

As a rule, a 40-day week is not enough.

If these people become more and more openly hostile, fewer and fewer will be willing to take on political and social responsibility.

Then the willingness to shape the home will decrease dramatically.
