February broke all records.

It was the warmest since records began.

This is also evident in the garden, where the starting signal for the new season was given much earlier than normal.

Experts from the district give tips on what to do now.

Fürstenfeldbruck – sun, warm temperatures, not a single snowflake.

Winter didn't show up in February.

Gerhard Reichert can even prove with figures that the last month of the cold season was already in spring mode.

The vice-chairman of the Gernlinden fruit and horticultural association has been measuring the temperature in his garden for many years.

Between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. this year in February it was 8.6 degrees - more than twice as much as last year.

“That’s really intense,” says Reichert.

A lot of things are happening earlier than usual

This is not without consequences.

A lot of things in the garden are up earlier this year than usual. Norbert Stöppel, head of Gartenfreunde Grafrath, has already started in his local natural paradise.

“I have already turned the compost over,” reports the 73-year-old.

But there is already a lot more to do.

Stöppel advises removing dead plants from last year.

Pruning fruit trees – which normally only takes place at the end of March – is already possible now.

You can also plant salsify and onions now.

Even the lawn is already growing.

Stöppel's advice: scarify and fertilize if necessary.

The garden expert has another tip: If you have spring flowers like daffodils or tulips in your pot, you shouldn't throw them away when they've finished blooming.

“You can bury the onions in the garden and they will come back every year.”

Sebastian Storch has already started the vegetable season.

“You can do a lot in the vegetable patch,” says the district consultant for garden and land maintenance.

You can sow carrots and parsley or plant broad beans.

The horticultural engineer also reminds us of the preparation for the main season in the garden.

Devices and aids would have to be woken up from hibernation.

“Sharpen the spade, oil the secateurs, check the lawn mower – then everything works when you need it.”

Late frost: Cover small trees

However, Storch also warns against too much euphoria in view of the premature spring.

It could also have its dark sides.

Because the earlier nature gets started, the more susceptible it is to a temporary return of winter.

Fruit blossoms in particular are in great danger when there is frost.

“When the flowers open, things get serious,” says Storch.

Small trees can be covered with a large fleece at night when temperatures are predicted to be below zero.

With larger trees you don't have much room for maneuver.

The 41-year-old advises against using torches or fires under the fruit tree, as is the case with professional growers.

As a gardener, you just have to let nature take its course.
