On one side of the road, a subdivision of pretty contemporary houses.
On the other, the Léopold Sédar-Senghor high school and a vast field promised to become... a prison.
This Saturday, nearly 300 residents of Magnanville (Yvelines) and many elected officials demonstrated at the departure of the school to mark – once again – their opposition to this project for a new prison complex which should see the light of day in 2028. It is planned to accommodate 700 detainees there, some of whom are on semi-release by 2028.
Already hostile in principle to the reception of this penitentiary center imposed on it by the State, the municipality is all the more upset as the thorny question of the precise location has just been resolved.
A few weeks ago, two sites were considered: this “number one”, as close as possible to the houses and the high school, and a “number two” site, located in the fields, 200 m from the residential area.
